What a Relaxed Maternity Photography Session in Melbourne Actually Feels LikE
One of the most common things people tell me before their maternity photography session is that they feel awkward in front of a camera. They worry they won’t know what to do, where to put their hands or how to look natural when someone is taking their photo.
The good news is that you don’t need to arrive knowing any of that.
My maternity sessions are designed to feel relaxed, natural and connected. There is no expectation for you to perform, hold complicated poses or spend the entire session smiling at the camera. I’ll create a comfortable environment, find the beautiful light and gently guide you when you need it. From there, the session is allowed to flow in a way that feels like you.
Relaxed photography does not mean no guidance
Candid maternity photography is sometimes misunderstood as a photographer simply standing back and hoping something lovely happens. That isn’t quite how I work.
I’ll give you prompts and small suggestions to help create movement and connection. I might ask you to walk slowly along the beach, stay close together or take a moment to look down at your growing belly. I may adjust where you are standing, bring you into better light or gently guide the placement of a hand.
The prompt is simply the starting point.
The best photographs often happen when you take that suggestion and make it your own. You might begin walking along the shoreline, then start playfully splashing through the water. Your partner might pull you closer, make you laugh or reach instinctively for your belly. Those natural reactions are where your relationship and personality begin to show.
I can create the relaxed environment and give you the direction, but the connection between you is what brings the photographs to life.
Less posing, more connection
My aim is to keep your maternity session as unposed as possible while still making sure you feel supported throughout it.
Rather than placing every hand, controlling every movement or asking you to hold the same position, I focus on creating a natural flow. I want you to move, interact and settle into the session without constantly wondering whether you are doing it correctly.
Sometimes that means walking through long grass, swaying together or letting the wind move through your clothing. At the beach, it may mean dipping your feet into the water, wandering along the sand or leaning into one another as the sun disappears. During an in-home maternity session, the movement may be quieter, with the two of you curled up together, talking, laughing or simply taking in this season before your baby arrives.
It does not need to be elaborate. It simply needs to feel like you.
A maternity gallery with movement and nostalgia
A complete gallery should hold more than one kind of photograph. Alongside the clear portraits and wider frames that show the landscape, I use grain, movement, blur and thoughtful cropping to add dimension and emotion to the story.
You may receive a photograph where the movement is intentionally soft, capturing the feeling of running through the water or the way your dress moved in the wind. Another image may be cropped closely around your belly, your hands or the way your partner holds you. These smaller details help a gallery feel layered and intimate.
Grain and blur are not added randomly. They are part of the nostalgic, film-inspired style that runs through my work. I want your maternity photos to feel warm, tactile and lived in, almost like memories pulled from an old family album.
I photograph using a mixture of digital photography and 35mm film, bringing together the reliability and detail of digital images with the texture and beautiful imperfections of film. Some photographs will feel quiet and still, while others will hold more movement and energy. Together, they create a gallery that feels complete.
Your maternity session should feel personal
Every couple and family connects differently, which is why I don’t want every session to follow the same collection of poses.
Some people are naturally playful and spend the session laughing. Others are quieter and feel more comfortable staying close, talking softly or simply taking in the moment. Neither approach is better. My role is to notice what feels natural for you and work with it.
The location also helps shape the feeling of your maternity photos. A Melbourne field session can feel earthy and open, while a Mornington Peninsula beach session may have more movement, wind and water. An in-home session can feel cosy, quiet and deeply personal.
Wherever we choose, the goal remains the same: to create maternity photographs that feel honest, connected and recognisably yours.
You do not need to be good at having your photo taken
You don’t need to practise poses before your session or arrive with a complicated list of things to do. You only need to be willing to connect, move and trust the process.
I’ll guide you into the right light, offer prompts and help create the flow. You can take those prompts and respond in whatever way feels natural. Laugh if something feels funny. Pull each other closer. Walk through the water. Take a quiet moment with your belly. Let your children join in with their usual energy if they are part of the session.
The aim is never perfection. It is to document this season in a way that feels like your life, your relationship and your story.
